olahudin Dja'far suffered an estimated loss of Rp 50 million (US$3,070) on Tuesday when hundreds of his koi died as a result of a widespread blackout in South Sumatra.

The ornamental fish breeder and resident of Celikah village in South Sumatra said the outage stemmed from disruption of an extra-high voltage electricity line used for long-range power transmission in the region.

"The lights went out last night, so the oxygen machine stopped. Because they couldn't breathe, almost 100 koi in the pond suddenly died," he said on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by IDNTimes.

After the power was restored, Solahudin cleaned the pond and transferred the surviving younger ornamental carp to an aquarium.

Solahudin, who served as the head of the Ogan Kemiring Ilir employment agency in the past, stressed the significant impact of such incidents on PLN customers like himself and other aquaculturists, noting that their animals and electronic devices had suffered damage.

"PLN should formally notify customers via WhatsApp to allow for preparation," he said.
