T

he government has cleared the way for the local unit of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD to deliver its cars to Indonesian buyers after months of import delays.

Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said on Tuesday that the government had signed last week an import letter of recommendation for BYD detailing the number of completely built-up (CBU) electric cars that it could import.

Bahlil noted the total figure was conditional on the company’s investment pledge, and that before it could proceed with importing its cars, “the firm needs to present the value it wants to invest [in building a local factory], the production capacity of the factory and the investment timeline”.

“We will give an import recommendation based on the progress of the investment realization. If I’m not wrong, we have [recommended] either 10 or 20 percent of the total production capacity,” he added.

In January, BYD introduced the three EV models it aims to sell in Indonesia: the BYD Dolphin starting with a price tag of US$26,000, the Atto 3 at $31,500 and the Seal at $38,500.

Despite opening preorders in February, BYD has not shipped a single car to Indonesian customers to date.
