C

oordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan said he would decline any cabinet appointment in the incoming administration of president-elect Prabowo Subianto, saying that the opportunity should go to a younger crop of politicians.

The senior minister added that his wife had asked him to not serve as a minister in the next government, but said he was willing to be part of Prabowo's advisory team because of the many “friends” he had in countries such as China, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

“I think [these ties] can still be capitalized for years to come. I think that could contribute a lot [to the next administration],” Luhut said on Thursday, as quoted by Detik.com.

Luhut has served the administration of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as coordinating maritime affairs and investment minister for eight years since his appointment in 2016.

He also served shorter terms as coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister, energy and mineral resources minister and presidential chief of staff.

Aside from cabinet roles, President Jokowi also entrusted him to lead multiple task forces, including those to tackle high airfare, manage oil and gas investments and oil palm plantations, address air pollution in Jakarta and accelerate investment in the country’s future capital Nusantara.
