T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry is preparing a draft regulation to audit energy-inefficient buildings as part of the country’s efforts to meet its emissions reduction goal.

Eniya Listiani Dewi, the ministry’s director general for new and renewable energy and energy conservation, said the regulation would target buildings with high energy consumption, as many had yet to take steps toward energy efficiency.

"If buildings start to use energy efficiently, they can reduce a significant amount of emissions," she said on Sunday during the 2nd Environment, Climate, Forestry and Renewable Energy (LIKE) Festival at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, as quoted by Detik.com.

Energy efficiency has been largely overlooked in Indonesia’s endeavor to reduce carbon emissions from the power sector, with experts and industry insiders blaming artificially low electricity prices as a major problem.

The government has kept electricity prices relatively unchanged since 2017, when it halted a policy that allowed for adjustments to electricity tariffs to reflect macroeconomic fluctuations, such as the rupiah exchange rate and crude oil prices.
