Next finance chief should have political background: Ex-Prabowo's campaign aide

A former campaign aide has said that the president-elect is seeking an individual with both financial and policymaking acumen to take the helm of the Finance Ministry under his administration, though "it's still too soon” to name any names ahead of the transfer of power in October.

former member of Prabowo Subianto’s campaign team says the president-elect is looking for a technocrat experienced in politics to fill the post of finance minister in his administration.

Laode Kamaluddin, who was part of the team’s expert council, added that the potential candidate must have earned Prabowo’s trust.

“First things first [is] passion, and then fulfilling the [next] requirements: professionalism, and of course has a political background. Because in the House of Representatives, if [the finance minister] cannot negotiate, [policies] won’t be passed,” Laode said Thursday as quoted by Detik.com.

He added that the president-elect had yet to name a candidate because “it’s still too soon”, considering that Prabowo would only be sworn in late October.

The position of finance minister is one of the most publicly watched cabinet posts due to the sensitivity of the matter for both investors and the market.

Some potential names have been hinted at on X and WhatsApp since Prabowo’s sweeping victory in the February polls, but remain mere speculation since the president-elect has not publicly named any potential candidates for the position.
