T

he Transportation Ministry says the feasibility study on the planned extension of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail (HSR) to Surabaya will be completed this year, according to Rail Transportation Director General Risal Wasal.

“We are currently processing” its continuation under the next administration said on Tuesday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.

The feasibility study aims to determine the route of the HSR service to the East Java capital, including whether the tracks will run near Java’s northern or southern coast, or through the middle of the island.

One proposed route for the extension passes the island’s southern region, starting from Bandung to Kertajati in West Java, Purwokerto in Central Java, through Yogakarta to Surakarta and then crossing into East Java in Madiun to end in Surabaya.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said last month that he was reviewing the construction plans for the Surabaya extension, which was expected to cut the travel time between the country’s two biggest cities to four hours.

Currently, train rides between the cities take about twice that long.

"The development plan still depends on the studies being carried out. There is also a study for going through the south, but it is a mountainous region, so the costs will be higher," Budi said, as quoted on Sept. 20 by Tempo.co.
