E

lectric motorcycle sales saw a major decline in January with a 70 percent drop compared with the same period last year, Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (Aismoli) secretary-general Hanggoro Ananta has said.

Hanggoro explained that the plummeting sales were caused by several factors, including the end of the government subsidy program for electric motorcycles that had disbursed large incentives for consumers over the past few years.

Hanggoro also assured the decline did not reflect the overall condition of the industry, despite acknowledging that several brands had suffered significant decreases.

“In terms of production, [industry players] in electric motorcycles are ready. Several brands have even increased their production capacity. We are optimistic to reach the sales target of more than 200,000 units this year,” Hanggoro said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kontan.

He further emphasized the importance of clear regulations regarding incentives to boost sales and urged the government to enhance its infrastructure support, especially by increasing access to charging and battery swapping stations for electric motorcycles.

“Adequate infrastructure is very important to address consumers' concerns, such as where they can charge and swap batteries for their electric motorcycles,” he said.
