ickel smelter PT Nickel Gunbuster Industry (GNI) has dismissed concerns over a possible shutdown due to the collapse of its China-based parent company, insisting that its nickel smelter in Central Sulawesi remains operational.

GNI is affiliated with stainless steel giant Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry Co., which recently delayed payments to local energy suppliers and failed to procure nickel ore, according to anonymous sources familiar with the situation, Bloomberg reported on Feb. 20.

The smelter was likely to halt production soon if the situation persisted, said the anonymous sources.

In response to the issue, GNI stated in a press release on Tuesday that “the company is undergoing operational management changes”, aiming at strengthening its structure to face future industrial challenges.

GNI acknowledged that the transition process might cause “inconvenience to certain stakeholders”, while assuring that every decision was taken with “careful consideration and long-term goals for common interests”.

“The company also understands that, recently, there have been many issues or reports in the media stating that the company was at risk of being shut down due to a problem faced by the parent company in China.” GNI wrote, without elaborating.
