Yamaha to shut piano factories in Indonesia: Union

Yamaha is reportedly looking to shut factories producing musical instruments in Indonesia because of weak market demand.

amaha is reportedly looking to shut down its musical instrument manufacturing operations in Indonesia because of weak market demand.

Indonesian Metal Workers Federation (FSPMI) president Riden Hatam Aziz revealed that two Yamaha factories producing pianos were set to close this year.

PT Yamaha Music Product Asia, located in the MM2100 industrial area of Bekasi, West Java, and which employs around 400 people, will close at the end of March, Riden said, according to a statement published by the labor union on Thursday.

Meanwhile, PT Yamaha Music Manufacturing Indonesia in Pulo Gadung, Jakarta, with 700 employees, is to cease operations at the end of December.

The decision was made because declining market demand, Ridden said, and production will be transferred to Yamaha factories in China and Japan.

In response to the issue, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said a study about the increasing number of companies leaving the country was underway.

He said Indonesia’s manufacturing industry had seen positive growth, citing the business confidence index (IKI) and manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) that remained in expansionary territory, or above the crucial 50-point mark.
