Trucking firms to strike over Idul Fitri operating restrictions

Aptrindo has announced that around 500 freight transportation companies in Greater Jakarta plans to hold a strike from March 20 to 21 to protest the government's policy restricting trucking operations over this year's 16-day collective leave for Idul Fitri.

undreds of freight transportation companies in Greater Jakarta plan to halt operations from March 20 to 21 to protest a government policy restricting trucking operations during the national collective leave for Idul Fitri from March 24 to April 8.

The Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Truck Operators Association (Aptrindo) announced on Monday that around 500 freight companies would take part in the strike.

“Aptrindo strongly objects to the inordinately long restriction policy, which lasts 16 days, [as it] will significantly impact logistics companies, particularly drivers and [load and unload] workers,” the association said in a circular signed by its Jakarta chair Dharmawan Witanto and the planned strike’s field coordinator, Fauzan Azim Musa.

Truck drivers and load/unload workers are paid daily wages based on services rendered, so restricting freight operations would result in a significant loss of their incomes.

Aptrindo previously suggested that the government restrict trucking operations from March 27 to April 3, or half as many as the 16 days in the final policy.

Aptrindo chairman Gemilang Tarigan said the government did not consider the association's input before finalizing the policy, even though it had sought feedback from trucking companies.
