apanese oil and gas company Inpex has begun the front-end engineering design (FEED) process for the Abadi liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Indonesia as the government pushes for its development.
The project, in which Inpex is the lead investor, has faced years of delays because of various changes, from moving the project onshore to accommodating a government request for a change of contractors.
The FEED launch was a milestone for the Abadi project while the company worked to accelerate its development, Inpex president and CEO Takayuki Ueda told reporters during the launch ceremony in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He added that the focus is now on the selection of the liquefaction technology licensor and gas turbine drive technology, both of which are critical to accelerating the overall broad end engineering design phase of the project.
“The FEED initiation also underscores our unwavering commitment to Indonesia and the Abadi Energy Project,” Ueda said.
Inpex, which controls 65 percent of the block, had initially planned to carry out the FEED for an onshore LNG plant (OLNG) last year.
The company has said it plans to reach a final investment decision (FID) for the project in 2027 and aims for production to start in the early 2030s.
