mman Mineral Nusa Tenggara has launched a new mining phase at the Batu Hijau mine in West Nusa Tenggara, extending the life of Indonesia’s second-largest copper and gold mine through 2030, with stockpiles potentially processed until 2033.

The company, a subsidiary of publicly listed mining company PT Amman Mineral Internasional, entered Phase 8 with reserves of around 460 million tonnes of minerals after it concluded Phase 7 last year.

Initial production of Phase 8 is slated to begin from the outer and upper layers of the Batu Hijau pit, which have lower copper content. Over time, mining will move to the middle and lower parts, which are richer in minerals. Production volume is expected to increase gradually in the next few years.

“This is part of our efforts to maintain the sustainability of mining operations and strengthen our contribution to the national economy,” Kartika Octaviana, Amman Mineral Internasional’s spokesperson, said in an official statement issued on Tuesday.

Operations will then transition to the Elang deposit, one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold porphyry resources, which is expected to be mined through 2046.

“Amman is committed to implementing responsible and sustainable mining practices. We believe Phase 8 will be the next important milestone, not only for the company, but also for Indonesia,” said Kartika.
