hinese electric vehicle battery producer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) is slated to begin production in Indonesia by March 2026, Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung has revealed.
He said the company had secured offtake agreements from Europe and the United States, but did not specify what firms were looking to procure the batteries produced through this project.
“They [CATL] expect [production] to begin by March 2026 at the latest,” Yuliot said on Friday, as quoted by news agency Antara.
The production will be implemented in two phases, he explained, with the initial stage set to be rolled out in 2026 to produce battery cells at half of the full 15 gigawatt-hour (GWh) capacity.
“This is the first stage that has received the approval [from the Chinese government] at 7.5 GWh,” Yuliot said, adding that the company would also seek to source funding through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to carry out the second phase and fully realize its full production capacity.
