T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry insists that critical mineral exports to the United States will remain strictly regulated under domestic laws, despite a new bilateral agreement to remove trade barriers.

“We will ensure that the provisions for critical mineral exports will remain in accordance with Indonesian government regulations,” the ministry’s secretary general, Dadan Kusdiana, said on Wednesday.

This comes in response to a joint statement released by Washington that revealed details on a yet-to-be finalized bilateral trade agreement between the US and Indonesia.

To secure a deal that would still subject Indonesian exports to a US import tariff of 19 percent, Jakarta has committed to lifting restrictions on industrial commodity exports, including critical minerals, in exchange for the US reducing the tariff, which was previously set at 32 percent.

However, Dadan said Indonesia would not allow the export of raw minerals, underscoring the government’s continued commitment to developing mineral processing industries.

“If you read the full sentence, it applies to processed minerals, all industrial commodities, so it's not the export of raw ores. This aligns with the government’s downstream [development] program,” he told Bisnis on Wednesday.
