T

he consumer confidence index (CCI) continued to decline in September, marking its lowest level in three-and-a-half years amid growing pessimism over the sluggish job market.

The index fell to 115 points in September from 117.2 in the preceding month, according to a monthly survey from Bank Indonesia (BI) published on Wednesday.

The figure marks the lowest reading since April 2022, when it was 113.1.

BI stated in the report that the September survey showed that “consumer confidence regarding economic conditions remains stable”, as the subindexes measuring respondents’ assessments of current and future economic conditions remained in optimistic territory.

However, these subindexes have also extended their declines. The current economic conditions index dropped by 2.4 points to a reading of 102.7, while the consumer expectations index, which reflects respondents’ perceptions of the economy over the next six months, fell 2 points to 127.2 in September.

Each of the two subindexes is composed of three indicators that reflect respondents’ views on income, job availability and business activity.

Consumer views on their current income situation and plans to buy durable goods also weakened, though they remained slightly above the 100-point mark separating optimism from pessimism.
