T Garuda Indonesia has appointed Glenny H. Kairupan, a retired military officer and member of President Prabowo Subianto’s Gerindra party, as its new CEO, a move analysts say tightens political oversight of the state-owned enterprise.
The company behind Indonesia’s national flag carrier, which also owns low-cost carrier Citilink, announced changes made to its executive board on Wednesday with 75 percent shareholder approval.
Glenny replaces Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, who had only served as the company’s CEO since November last year.

Glenny previously held a position on Garuda Indonesia's board of commissioners, joining the airline operator primarily from a military and political background.
He is a retired Indonesian Military (TNI) officer and an alumnus of the Military Academy (AKABRI). His military experience covers strategic overseas studies, teaching roles and Military Region commander (Danrem) positions in Central Java and then-East Timor He was also conferred the rank of honorary lieutenant general by President Prabowo in August.
As a Gerindra member, Glenny ran unsuccessfully as a legislative candidate for the House of Representatives in 2009 and 2014 and for deputy governor of North Sulawesi in 2015.
