View all search resultsBP Batam says it is looking at consortium BIB to take over the Hang Nadim airport expansion project after original contractor WIKA withdrew, apparently due to ongoing financial troubles.
he Batam Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) aims to continue expanding Hang Nadim International Airport following the withdrawal of state-owned construction company PT Wijaya Karya (WIKA) as the project’s contractor.
The authority said it was currently exploring a partnership with PT Bandara Internasional Batam (BIB), the consortium led by state-run airport operator Angkasa Pura I (AP I) that manages Hang Nadim airport in Batam, the Riau Islands.
BP Batam head Amsakar Achmad said an evaluation was underway to ensure that all contractual and good governance obligations related to the project would be met.
“Our internal team is currently reviewing the contract and cooperation terms. Our principle is simple: The sooner this airport is built, the better it will be for Batam’s economy,” he said on Monday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.
If any partner in the consortium encountered certain internal challenges, the government would review the partnership, Amsakar explained, adding that it was open to the possibility of alternative, beneficial deals.
The airport expansion was among the strategic projects to improve connectivity and competitiveness in the Batam Free Trade Zone (FTZ), he continued, highlighting the authority’s current focus on increasing investment certainty and improving information disclosure.
BIB is led by AP I, which holds a 51 percent stake, and consists of South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) with 30 percent and WIKA with the remaining 19 percent.
