View all search resultsThe Transportation Ministry has reiterated that the airfield holds valid permits and is operating in accordance the applicable regulations.
inance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Wednesday that the airstrip of the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi operated under a special permit, which may explain why routine customs deployment had not been required.
“It seems that is the case [there are no customs officers]. We will see whether they should be assigned there. It appears the airport received a special permit at the time,” said Purbaya, as quoted by Kompas.
“If needed, we are ready [to deploy personnel]. We have enough customs officers. Immigration has also expressed willingness. Once assigned, we will send our people.”
The remarks came after Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin raised concern during the TNI’s Integrated Exercise 2025 in Morowali, where he pointed to the existence of an “airport operating without any state apparatus” on site.
Sjafrie suggested that the absence of government officials at such a critical infrastructure facility could expose Indonesia to “economic sovereignty” risks.
A facility operating without a state presence was an “anomaly”, Sjafrie said, after observing the drill on Nov. 20.
He stressed the need for regulatory updates and strengthened defense capacity at strategic points.
