T

he government of the Malaysian state of Sarawak plans to launch a new airline, Air Borneo, in January next year, aiming to boost air connectivity across the island, including direct links to Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara and Singapore.

The plan was conveyed by Sarawak Transport Minister YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin during an official visit to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) on Wednesday. Improved air connectivity is expected to serve as a new economic driver for the island of Borneo.

“We are on the same island of Borneo. We are very interested in the development of Nusantara. This is the future,” Lee said during the visit on Wednesday. Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state and is located on the island of Borneo, rather than in Peninsular Malaysia, where the capital is located.

“As fellow Borneans, we are proud that one day the whole world will come to Nusantara,” he added.
