he Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has banned imports of pork and derivative products from Spain following a report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) on the emergence of African swine fever (ASF) near Barcelona.
The ban, which also mandates the destruction of all pork shipments from Spain, follows a WOAH alert on an outbreak of the highly contagious viral disease last November in Bellaterra municipality, just outside Barcelona. It is suspected that the disease originated in a wild boar that had consumed contaminated food brought into Spain.
“We have instructed all Barantin technical implementation units and quarantine officers to remain vigilant and tighten controls,” Sriyanto, the agency’s animal quarantine deputy, said in a statement on Thursday.
He cited a WOAH follow-up report issued on Dec. 19 declaring that the disease had reoccurred in Spain, where it was last recorded in 1994.
All pork from the country was banned from Indonesia until WOAH had declared an end to the ASF outbreak in Spain, the statement said.
“If pork is imported from Spain, quarantine measures, rejection and/or destruction will be implemented,” Sriyanto stated.
Authorities have been urged to enhance surveillance at all points of entry, including airports, seaports and border crossings, and to educate the public on the dangers of ASF.
