ormer finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has been appointed as a member of the governing board of one of the world’s wealthiest private philanthropic organizations, the Gates Foundation.
The foundation, based in the United States city of Seattle, announced the appointment in a press statement issued on Monday local time, noting that Sri Mulyani’s appointment would bring “valuable perspective” by virtue of “her distinguished experience in economic and development policy”.
“Her leadership will help ensure that our resources continue to be used to expand opportunity, promote inclusive economic growth and improve outcomes for communities around the world,” Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman was quoted as saying in the statement.
The former minister will serve in the governing board that was established in 2022 alongside fellow members Ashish Dhawan, Helene Gayle, Strive Masiyiwa, Thomas J. Tierney and Suzman, as well as the organization’s chairman, Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates.
The statement adds that Gates made a commitment to spend down the foundation’s endowment over the next two decades, and Fortune magazine reported early last year that the plan was to exhaust the entire fund within 20 years after the death of Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda French Gates, a cofounder of the foundation.
The resources would be focused on ending preventable deaths of mothers and babies, ensuring that the next generation grows up without suffering from deadly infectious diseases and lifting millions of people out of poverty and putting them on a path to prosperity, elaborated the statement.
“With 20 years to make the biggest impact possible in the lives of those who need it most, I am honored to join the Gates Foundation’s board to contribute to this pivotal moment of challenge and opportunity,” Sri Mulyani was quoted as saying in the same statement.
