irAsia Malaysia announced the launch of a new international route connecting Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur and Batam in Indonesia’s Riau Islands province, with daily flights starting on March 13.

The new service expands the airline’s network between the two countries to 19 routes, which carried nearly 3 million passengers last year. It also aims to enhance connectivity and strengthen ties between the two neighboring countries.

“We are thrilled to expand our connectivity with the new Kuala Lumpur-Batam route, providing more opportunities for travel, tourism and cultural exchange,” AirAsia Malaysia CEO Fareh Mazputra said in a statement on Monday.

He noted that Malaysians and Singaporeans are among Batam’s top visitors. The new route is expected to enable travelers from other countries to explore Batam, while also giving residents of the city easier access to destinations across AirAsia’s extensive network via Kuala Lumpur.

In 2025, Batam welcomed more than 120,000 international arrivals, with Malaysian travelers accounting for 23 percent of the total, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

With the new route, AirAsia projects the number of Malaysian visitors to Batam will rise further, boosting tourism and economic exchange between the two countries.
