Shell, BP to receive fuel import quotas every six months this year

As private fuel retailers began seeing their annual stocks run low last August, the government refused to issue additional quotas and instead urged them to buy imported base fuel from Pertamina.

T

he Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has said it will gradually grant import quotas to private fuel retailers every six months this year. The policy will affect Shell, Vivo and PT Aneka Petroindo Raya (BP-AKR), a joint venture between Indonesia’s PT AKR Corporindo and the United Kingdom’s BP.

“The import quotas are [to be] issued every six months to provide sufficient time for the [quota] proposal and preparation process,” the ministry’s oil and gas director general Laode Sulaeman said on Monday, as reported by Bloomberg Technoz.

“This allows us to regularly track changes in demand.”

Hadi Ismoyo, an advisory board member of the Society of Indonesian Petroleum Engineers (IATMI), argued that the scheme could lead to fuel shortages similar to those seen last year if implemented recklessly.

“It takes time to take care of paperwork every time a private company applies for imports and seeks recommendation letters. If there is even a slight delay, the shipping process to the country will also be delayed,” he said on Friday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.

“Every import permit application submitted within a specific timeframe must be approved quickly. Don't be late.”
