T Energi Mega Persada (EMP), the publicly listed oil and gas arm of diversified conglomerate Bakrie Group, has announced the discovery of a new oil reserve by its subsidiary PT Imbang Tata Alam (ITA) at an exploration site in the Malacca Strait off Riau province.
In a public information disclosure issued on Monday, EMP president director Syailendra S. Bakrie confirmed the discovery of a productive layer in the Upper Sihapas Formation, and than an initial evaluation indicated a net pay thickness of approximately 80 feet (24.4 meters).
Preliminary evaluations estimate 31 million barrels of original oil in place (OOIP), or the volume of crude oil stored in a reservoir prior to production.
Flow testing recorded an production rate of 350 barrels of oil per day (bopd), reflecting “good reservoir quality and stable flow potential”, Syailendra stated.
“From a geological perspective, this discovery is interpreted as a stratigraphic trap. This discovery opens opportunities for further exploration for new oil resources and reserves,” he said.
The find could potentially increase production by an additional 1,000 to 1,500 barrels of oil per day under the company’s plans, which include drilling six development wells.
Earlier this month, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry announced that oil production stood at 605,300 bopd, surpassing the 2025 target. Meanwhile, gas lifting reached 951,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), or just 4.82 percent less than last year’s target of 1 million boepd.
