tate-owned logistics agency Bulog has proposed building a warehouse within Indonesia’s upcoming Haj village in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as the government plans to export 2,280 tonnes of premium rice this year for haj pilgrims.
Bulog president director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani said that in the first phase, the exported rice would be distributed through organizers or kitchens that cook for Indonesian haj pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, followed by plans to build its own warehouse in the Haj Village to manage the rice supply directly.
“We have coordinated with the Haj Minister and submitted a request for Bulog to be given a space in the Haj Village. If allowed, Bulog will build a warehouse there, so that the rice from Indonesia can be stored and distributed directly to meet the needs of pilgrims,” Rizal said on Monday, as quoted by Kumparan.
Bulog’s planned warehouse in the Haj Village will also be used to store other food commodities from Indonesia, such as meat and fish, to meet the consumption needs of the haj pilgrims.
Rizal said that rice exports to Saudi Arabia would continue to be implemented as long as Indonesia could maintain its food self-sufficiency, helping reduce the haj pilgrims’ reliance on supplies from other countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam.
“This is a matter of national pride. For the initial stage, the scheme will still operate on a business-to-business basis, which later will be incorporated into the operational financing components of the haj [program],” he added.
