Coal supply ‘secured’ amid production cuts, PLN says

PLN's reassurances stand in stark contrast to warnings from independent power producers, whose stockpiles have fallen to an average of 10 operating days, well below the 25-day benchmark considered ideal.

tate-owned electricity company PLN will receive 84 million tonnes of coal from eight major suppliers to power its coal-fired power plants, amid the government’s plan to cut the production quota this year.

PLN generation management director Rizal Calvary expected that volume, obtained under the domestic market obligation scheme, would be sufficient to power the firm’s coal fleets until the end of August.

However, the firm would need another 40 million tonnes of coal to ensure smooth operations through the end of the year, Rizal noted, bringing the total required volume for 2026 to 124 million tonnes.

"The current availability of coal at PLN is adequate, so there will be no potential for blackouts or power outages," Rizal said in an official statement issued on Friday.

He said the average days of coal production (HOP) for coal plants Tanjung Jati B and Batang are currently recorded at 10 operating days. The facilities have a capacity of 4 x 660 megawatts (MW) and 2 x 1000 MW, respectively.

Rizal expressed optimism that deliveries would be accelerated ahead of Idul Fitri.

"We hope that before Idul Fitri, coal will be delivered to all power plants in need, to address the threat of future deficits," he said.
