T

he Transportation Ministry has reported that cumulative public transport passengers reached 10.8 million between March 13-21, up 8.58 percent from 10.03 million passengers in last year’s same holiday period.

“Homebound travelers using public transport up to Idul Fitri day remain quite high, but are still under control. The most widely used mode of transportation remains railways,” said Ernita Titis Dewi, head of the ministry’s public communication bureau, on Sunday.

Rail transport carried the largest share of passengers at 3.3 million, rising 13.46 percent year-on-year.

This was followed by ferry crossings at 2.7 million passengers, up 14.01 percent, air transport at 2.4 million passengers, up 2.95 percent, buses at 1.7 million passengers, up 9.37 percent, and sea transport at 783,114 passengers.

Meanwhile, toll operator PT Jasa Marga recorded a sharp rise in outbound traffic from Greater Jakarta during the Idul Fitri holiday period, with 2.2 million vehicles leaving the urban area during the mudik (homecoming exodus) period between March 11 and 22, marking a 27.1 percent increase from normal traffic.

The cumulative figure represents 62.8 percent of the projected 3.5 million vehicles expected to exit Greater Jakarta throughout March 11-31.
