he orthopedic team at Eka Hospital’s Gatam Institute Orthopedic and Spine has handled more than 1,000 cases of spinal surgery in the last 8 months, which is a huge achievement. The team was able to handle that many cases because it has the first and only surgical navigation robot in Southeast Asia.

The robot helps increase patient safety during spinal surgery with an accuracy of 99.9 percent for screw implant placement. As a matter of fact, about 100 of the cases taken by the team over the past eight months, which were of both scoliosis and pinched nerve (HNP), has used a robotic navigation instrument – with a 100 percent success rate of surgery.

The utilization of robotic navigation is led by Dr. Luthfi Gatam, Sp.OT (K) Spine, Chairman of the team of orthopedic doctors at Eka Hospital. In addition to the aforementioned cases, the institute also has a team of specialist doctors for knee and hip consultations, sports injuries, as well as pediatric orthopedic consultations. It is also training more doctors to be able to keep up with technological advancements in the field.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday (25/02/2022), Dr. Luthfi explained that one of the biggest risks of spinal procedures was loss of blood, which could lead to death. The robotic technology, he said, was less invasive and was therefore safer and typically allowed for a shorter recovery period. He also noted that the machines used in the more traditional method for spinal surgeries exposed patients to radiation.

Four spine specialists in Indonesia have received training and certification to perform operations using this spinal surgery navigation robot. They are Dr. Phedy, Sp.OT (K) Spine, Dr. Harmantya Mahadhipta, Sp.OT (K) Spine, Dr. Syafrudin, Sp.OT (K) Spine and Dr. Rizki Gatam, Sp.OT (K) Spine.

"We are, of course, very grateful for the trust of the patients, their families and all the observers who, to this day, have always entrusted their hopes to the orthopedic team at Eka Hospital, the Gatam Institute. We believe that many struggles and tears have accompanied the success of each of these spinal surgeries. Therefore, Eka Hospital has a responsibility to continue to provide the most advanced technologies to assist the hands of experts, namely Gatam Institute doctors, in carrying out operations,” said Erwin Suyanto, Head of Marketing, Corporate and Public Relations.

Erwin explained that in addition to the navigational robots, Eka Hospital also had access to other advanced technologies, including O-Arm, 3D C-Arm, Richard Wolf (Germany) Spinal Endoscopic Instruments and Standing MRIs, which could specifically determine the location of pressure on the joints and spine that were sources of pain.

The combination of navigational robots and the expertise of the Gatam Institute orthopedic medical team is expected to bring spinal surgery in Indonesia into a new era and put the country on pace with medical advancements in countries all over the world.

Furthermore, Eka Hospital is confident that, as of now, its orthopedic center is the most advanced in Southeast Asia, representing Indonesia. The view is echoed by PERKEDWI, the Health Ministry and the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, distinguishing Eka Hospital as a medical tourism pilot hospital for the orthopedic and spinal fields.

"The presence of the Gatam Institute at the Eka Hospital Group is expected to serve as a center for handling severe cases in the orthopedic field, and it is not impossible that it will become a place of learning for orthopedic doctors throughout Indonesia. We also don't get tired of informing that Gatam Institute's orthopedic services are present throughout our hospital network in BSD City, Cibubur, Bekasi and Pekanbaru," said Dr. Rina Setiawati, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Eka Hospital Group.

The institute says that in the near future, it plans to help more patients, develop research and advance medical education in Indonesia, utilizing tools and exposing new doctors to newer technologies. Most Indonesians choose to go abroad for healthcare services, and the Institute aims to change this by forming trust with citizens.
