A look at rom-coms from all over the world that also offer sex education, studies in humanity and witty political twists.

Romantic comedies always seem to draw both devoted fans and loyal detractors. Considering how their swoon-worthy formula dates all the way back to World War II, it is understandable how some moviegoers of the modern era find the classic genre already trite with predictable narratives and, to a certain extent, unrealistic diegesis. Nevertheless, filmmakers all over the globe have made attempts to dust off the old hat by imbuing a fresh point of view that might spark a worthwhile conversation as the credits roll.

Here are some recommended unique romantic comedies that may convert the detractors and give fans something to think about.

Band Aid (the United States, 2017)

If La La Land is too dreamy for you, perhaps Band Aid will do. Helmed by Zoe Lister-Jones who also plays the lead, the rom-com captures a married couple on the verge of separation as they cannot help but fight over even the pettiest of things such as dirty dishes. When all methods of resolution fail, they decide to pull off one last resort to save their relationship: they form a garage rock band and turn their arguments and pet peeves into original songs. Their ludicrous side gig eventually leads to profound realization and needed healing for all parties involved.

While the songs serve as the glitzy attraction, what makes Band Aid stand out among similar, music-themed rom-coms is the relatability and the you-can-try-this-at-home presentation of the film. Band Aid makes up for the subtle comedy by placing a greater emphasis on a couple that palpably does its damnedest to make it out the other side. Sometimes the hard-knuckled struggle is more treasured than the desired result.
