esults from the 2022 National Financial Literacy and Inclusion Survey (SNLIK) by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) showed that Indonesia's financial inclusion index rose by 8.91 basis points (bps) this year to 85.10 percent, compared to the 2019 SNLIK of 76.19 percent.

Meanwhile, the national financial literacy index rose by 11.65 bps this year to 49.68 percent, compared to the previous SNLIK of 38.03 percent.

The latest data showed that though the financial inclusion index has increased to become nearer to the target of 90 percent by 2024, there are still many across the country who do not really understand the benefits of financial products and services, one of which is insurance.

Based on these conditions, Allianz Indonesia continues to consistently conduct education to increase insurance literacy and penetration with its annual Media Workshop, this year with the topic of “Life & Health Insurance 101: Do's & Don'ts Before and While Having Insurance.”

Allianz Life Indonesia business director Bianto Surodjo said the workshop was held as a form of the company's trust in the media, which played an important role in conveying information and educating the wider community. Allianz Indonesia expressed its appreciation to the media for their support of Allianz Indonesia and the Indonesian insurance industry.

“We always support the government's efforts to increase awareness and penetration of insurance in Indonesia. We continue to focus on carrying out various initiatives, be it literacy activities through CSR programs as well as regular education to customers and the wider community through social media and other activities involving the media. We hope that the ongoing activities carried out by Allianz Indonesia can continue to minimize the gap between inclusion and insurance literacy," he said.

Incorrect understanding of life insurance and health insurance

In the media workshop,  Allianz Life Indonesia chief product officer Himawan Purnama discussed several issues and misconceptions among Indonesians regarding life insurance, including: insurance is considered the same as saving; insurance is considered an investment; buying insurance without knowing the type of product and policy coverage you have; and buying insurance without knowing whether it is as needed.

Himawan also explained the stages and terms that must be known in life insurance, as well as reminding important things that customers must do when receiving their policy; checking personal data, understanding the insurance benefits listed in the policy, exceptions from the policy coverage, as well as the insurance coverage period.

Allianz Life Indonesia product marketing and health service Sukarno explained the differences between health insurance and life insurance, both in terms of function and type. The public, he says, must fully understand the coverage of the required health insurance benefits and make sure to fill in the correct personal data and their complete medical history.

Sukarno added that customers must understand the procedure for submitting claims as well as things that can cause claims to be rejected, such as incomplete documents, a lapsed policy, the policy not having gone through a waiting period, as well as pre-existing conditions and non-disclosure.

At the end of the session, the speakers reminded customers not to be late in making their premium payments and not stop reviewing policies periodically according to their needs.
