ailway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has announced plans for a new train service tailored to the needs of farmers and traders by simplifying the movement of cargo.
“This train is designed to support the mobility of farmers and traders, while at the same time facilitating the transport of crops and goods more freely, safely and efficiently,” KAI vice president of public relations Anne Purba said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by Bisnis.
The farmer-trader train is expected to become a tool to empower rural communities, bridging supply chains and creating a more inclusive transportation ecosystem.
To support the initiative, rolling stock is being modified at the Surabaya Gubeng Train Workshop in East Java. The trains’ layout has been redesigned to accommodate goods and agricultural products.
This includes the seats, which will be aligned along the left and right sides of the train car, leaving the center aisle open for produce, merchandise and easier passenger movement.
In addition, the width of the vestibule doors is being increased from 800 to 900 millimeters and partition walls and vestibules will be removed to improve access. The modifications will reduce seating capacity from 106 to 73 seats.
Despite these changes, each car will still be equipped with a toilet and luggage racks will be retained for passenger convenience.
