s the country celebrates National Press Day on Wednesday, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has called for better management of foreign media, in order to create a fairer ecosystem for local platforms.

Speaking from the State Palace, Jokowi acknowledged that Indonesia’s media industry had been “under intense pressure” for the past two years, due to the rapid digital transformation and the increasing competition local outlets faced from international news companies.

“[We] must continue to strive for a more balanced, competitive [press] climate. Foreign [news] platforms must be regulated... We [have to] strengthen the rules for fair and balanced profit sharing between global and local platforms,” the President said in his speech.

He also called on Indonesia’s media industry actors to “transform and innovate”, while also underlining the importance of journalism for the country’s democracy.

Jokowi went on to say that the government would be willing to publish a new law, revise the current 1999 Press Law or publish a new government regulation to accelerate press development in the country, although details on a new regulatory framework remain unclear.

“We cannot just become consumers of global digital technology products, and must immediately build [our own] innovative technology platforms that will help the public to obtain quality, accurate and accountable information,” he added.
