Indonesia Decides

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has floated the idea of entering the recently formed United Indonesia Coalition (KIB), while continuing to suggest it might use its close ties with Anies Baswedan to back the outgoing Jakarta governor as presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

At the party’s 20th anniversary celebration on Sunday, PKS secretary-general Aboe Bakar Al-Habsy said it had yet to decide on a candidate to back in the 2024 presidential election, while signaling the party was interested in backing Anies, who has consistently ranked in the top three in recent electability polls.

The celebration was attended by a number of the country’s top politicians, including National Awakening Party (PKB) head Muhaimin Iskandar, National Mandate Party (PAN) head Zulkifli Hasan, Democrat Party deputy head Edhy Baskoro and deputy head of the Golkar Party Firman Soebagyo.

Jakarta Governor Anies was also in attendance, along with his counterparts from West Sumatra and West Nusa Tenggara as well as his former deputy governor and current Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno.

Earlier this month, Golkar announced its alliance coalition with PAN and the United Development Party (PPP) in what analysts see as a move to endorse party chief Airlangga Hartarto chief as a presidential candidate.

“Who knows, with a get-together like this, [we] might find a partner [to run with] in the 2024 elections… Maybe this is where we start [our] matchmaking meetings,” Aboe said, mentioning Anies’ name, along with PKB chair Muhaimin, Minister Sandiaga, Democrat chair Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, among those who might receive the party’s offer.
