he Batam Cow and Goat Farmers and Traders Association has reported demand for a total of 3,160 cattle and 4,350 goats for the Idul Adha holiday – a third of which have been ordered by Singaporeans.
Musofa, the association chairman, said on Tuesday that Singaporean Muslims had ordered 948 cattle and 4,350 goats to be slaughtered in Batam for the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, which will likely fall on July 9.
The association had just received 320 cattle from Lampung, delivered via cargo ship, on Monday.
“We are thankful that the government has allowed us to deliver animals from other regions,” Musofa told The Jakarta Post.
As foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) continues to spread, the price of sacrificial livestock has witnessed a notable hike amid rising demand and limited supply nearing the celebration of Idul Adha.
“The animals are delivered according to strict health protocols,” Musofa stressed, adding that they hoped to be able to satisfy the demand on the holiday.
Wahyu Wahyudin, a Riau Islands legislator, said that Singaporeans observing Idul Adha in Batam were a source of income from religious tourism, calculating that there was around Rp 120 billion (US$8.1 billion) of potential revenue each year.
