The police have formed a special team to probe the fatal shootout between two of its members after comments from the legislature and the President implied procedural deviation.
he National Police have set up a special joint team to investigate a fatal shootout between two police officers last week that left one officer dead at the residence of the internal affairs chief.
National Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the team would involve members from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and the National Police Commission (Kompolnas).
“I have set up the special team led by National Police deputy chief [Comr. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono],” he told reporters on Tuesday at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.
Separately, Komnas HAM commissioner Beka Ulung Hapsara said it was still waiting for the police to explain the kind of assistance they expected from the commission.
“Officially, Komnas HAM has yet to be contacted by the National Police. We are still waiting for clarity and details on the kind of involvement the police chief meant in [investigating] the case,” Beka said as quoted by Detik.com on Tuesday.
He added that Komnas HAM would work in keeping with its mandate and authority.
Earlier on Tuesday, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo called for due process in investigating the fatal police shootout.
