he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) refused to join a special team formed by the police to investigate a fatal shootout between two police officers, instead choosing to form its own team to maintain independence.
The National Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said on Tuesday that he would invite Komnas HAM to assist a special team led by National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Gatot Eddy Pramono involving members of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) and General Supervision Inspectorate (Irwasum).
Komnas HAM commissioner Choirul Anam said on Thursday that Komnas HAM would carry out a separate investigation to ensure its independence in uncovering the truth of the fatal incident.
He appreciates that police would allow access for Komnas HAM, including to interrogate those involved or probe the evidence.
“We welcome and appreciate what the police do for being transparent and accountable. However, because we are an independent institution, Komnas HAM will work alone,” he said.
The police have repeatedly stressed that police officer E, ranked a second agent (Bharada) in the police’s Mobile Brigade unit, was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed fellow officer Brig. J, who outranked him, at the residence of internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo.
