T

he National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has officially formed an ad hoc team to investigate if the 2004 murder of activist Munir Said Thalib constitutes a gross human rights violation.

Speaking during a press conference at the Komnas HAM building in Menteng, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, commission chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik said the ad hoc team would consist of five members.

“Two members will represent Komnas HAM, namely myself and Sandrayati Moniaga. There are also three other names from the public we’ve contacted, but so far, only Usman Hamid has expressed his willingness to join the team”, said Taufan, referring to the Amnesty International Indonesia executive director and former member of the independent fact-finding team set up in 2004 to investigate Munir’s murder.

He said that those serving within the team were those with extensive experience in investigating grave human right violations and with proven credibility and integrity.

He further elaborated that “the team is set to begin work immediately and the result of the investigation will then be discussed at a plenary meeting to decide the legal status of Munir’s case”.

He added that the five members would be assisted by a team of technical staff, which would also be a mix of the commission’s internal members and from the public.
