The antigraft body has opened a fresh graft probe in connection with the battered flag carrier, this one allegedly involving over US$6 million in bribes paid to lawmakers for purchasing Airbus aircraft.
he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said on Tuesday that it had opened a new investigation into alleged bribery involving House of Representatives lawmakers who served in 2009-2014, in connection with the procurement of Airbus aircraft by Garuda Indonesia between 2010 and 2015.
“The allegation involves around Rp 100 billion [US$6.55 million] in bribes received by House members and other business parties,” KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri said in a statement, as quoted by Tempo.
Ali said the new probe was a follow-up to an earlier graft investigation into the flag carrier that had involved the assistance of authorities in the United Kingdom and France. The KPK would announce any suspects on gathering sufficient evidence to order their immediate arrest, he added.
Ali also urged all witnesses to cooperate with the new investigation.
“The public’s support in watching over this investigation is, of course, necessary to the KPK’s work,” he said.
Ali added that the alleged corruption involved major businesses and well-known individuals, and that it had resulted in massive losses to the state.
“We will inform the public of each development in a transparent manner,” he said.
