fter an emergency meeting held on Friday evening, the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) announced that it had scheduled an extraordinary congress (KLB) in the next three months after receiving official written requests from several soccer clubs.
This comes in the wake of the deadly Oct. 1 Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy in Malang, East Java, that left 135 people dead and subsequently fueled calls for greater accountability over the PSSI’s role in the tragedy.
“The PSSI’s executive committee decided to expedite the extraordinary congress in response to the letters sent by two of its member clubs, as we’d rather avoid an internal conflict among members of the PSSI,” PSSI chief Mochamad Iriawan said on Saturday morning.
The letters in question were sent out by Persis Solo and Persebaya Surabaya, two clubs that currently play in Liga 1, the top flight of Indonesian soccer. “Persis hereby requests the PSSI to take responsibility and convene a KLB at least 30 days after this letter is sent,” said the Surakarta-based football club in an open letter published on Tuesday.
Per the PSSI’s statutes, the KLB can be forced to convene if 50 percent of PSSI members or two-thirds of delegates that represent PSSI members send out an official written request. As of now, the majority of the 87 voting members consists of 34 PSSI regional branches in each province and the 50 soccer clubs that play in Liga 1, Liga 2 and Liga 3.
While they have not sent out an official written letter, Madura United FC and PSM Makassar have also indicated that they are in favor of a KLB.
“If the PSSI has no intention of following the [government’s fact-finding team] recommendations, we’re prepared to send out an official letter requesting a KLB,” Madura United wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
