United States President Joe Biden arrived at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport at around 9.45 p.m. Sunday local time, greeted by a performance of the Balinese traditional pendet dance.
President of South Korea Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee also arrived at the airport later at around 10.30 p.m.
Earlier in the evening, the airport had welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and First Lady Yuko Kishida; Russian Foreignt Minister Sergey Lavrov; Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; Fijian Special Envoy Ratu Inoke Kubuabola; International Labour Organization (ILO) Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo; and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) President Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and First Lady Iriana also arrived in Bali on Sunday evening from Phnom Penh where he attended the ASEAN Summit.
President Jokowi affirmed that Indonesia is fully ready for the series of G20 meetings. “This is very good news in such difficult times, especially because President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping are attending,” the President said as quoted by Kompas.
The war in Ukraine and its economic fallout is expected to dominate discussions in Bali and at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Bangkok at the end of the week, alongside climate commitments, food insecurity and tensions over the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea and North Korea.
