The new rule, signed by Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Abdullah Azwar Anas on Friday, will only apply during Ramadan and requires civil servants to work for 32.5 hours per week.
Despite the shorter working hours, the ministry is upbeat that government workers will continue to provide a good service to the public.
"This new rule is to ensure that Ramadan will not reduce the productivity and performance of civil servants in meeting their targets," the ministry said in a statement published on Tuesday.
The new rule also stipulates that for government agencies applying a five-day work schedule, government workers can leave work at 3 p.m.
"For government agencies with five-day work schedules, the working hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.," the ministry said.
There will be a 30-minute break between Monday and Thursday and an hour’s break on Friday to allow time for Friday prayers.
