Politician and constitutional expert Yusril met with his counterpart from the National Mandate Party (PAN), Zulkifli Hassan, at the PAN headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday evening, a week after he made a similar visit to Gerindra Party leader and presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto.

Yusril said the two leaders, both of Islam-based parties, had discussed the possibility of electoral cooperation, as his party alone did not exceed the 4 percent threshold of representation in the legislature required for it to field a presidential candidate.

When asked about the possibility of his party joining the proposed grand electoral alliance of parties backing the Jokowi administration, Yusril said the idea was favorable provided it did not result in the 2024 race having only a single candidate pair.

“When we met with Pak Prabowo, we were at the stage of confirming the formation of an alliance, including the grand alliance,” he said.

“And we said it would be ideal to have all political parties together, joining hands to build our politics going forward. But we warned against having only one candidate running because that would be a problem for our Constitution,” he added.
