N. Sumatra Police officer discharged for failing to stop son’s assault of student

o:p>North Sumatra Police have dishonorably discharged Achirudin Hasibuan for failing to intervene to stop his son from assaulting a university student in December following an ethics hearing on Tuesday.
Achiruddin previously held a middle officer rank of Adj. Sr. Comr. Prior to the hearing, he was arrested and relieved of his duty as chief of operations at the provincial police drug crimes directorate.
“The [police] ethics panel decided to dishonorably discharge him,” North Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Panca Putra Simanjuntak.
Achiruddin has filed an appeal against the verdict.
Achirudin’s 19-year-old son, Aditya Hasibuan, has been charged with assault under Article 351 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Aditya allegedly assaulted 19-year-old university student Ken Admiral on Dec. 21, 2022, and damaged his car. The next day, the victim went to Aditya’s house in Medan to demand compensation, but Aditya allegedly assaulted him again, in front of his father.
Panca said instead of intervening, Achiruddin did nothing to prevent the assault and ordered his subordinate to point a weapon at Ken.
Irwansyah Putra Nasution, Ken’s legal attorney, welcomed the verdict and is hopeful that the appellate hearing would uphold the verdict.
A video of Aditya’s alleged assault has been circulating on social media, gaining attention because of its similarity to an alleged assault by Mario Dandy Satrio against the teenage son of a member of GP Ansor, the youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the nation’s largest grassroots Muslim organization, which was also recorded and made national headlines.
Mario’s alleged assault brought public attention to his family’s lavish lifestyle, including his possession of a Jeep Rubicon and Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Last month, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Mario’s father, former mid-ranking tax collector Rafael Alun Trisambodo, a suspect on charges of taking bribes from taxpayers for the past 12 years. (dre)
