Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said the existing military law has served as guidance for the Indonesian Military (TNI) to engage professionally in their work.
efense Minister Prabowo Subianto said on Thursday that existing Law No. 34/2004 on the Indonesian Military (TNI) has been implemented effectively and has achieved the target of curbing corruption within the institution.
Prabowo added that the existing military law has also served as guidance for the TNI to engage professionally in their work.
"The TNI law has been implemented for a long time and has worked well. We managed to prevent leakage and corruption. The President himself wants a strong oversight and I think that also has worked well," Prabowo was quoted by Antara, on Thursday. The senior minister was asked for his comment on the ongoing process to amend the military law.
The legal division of the TNI is currently working on a draft to amend the current military law to allow for a greater participation of both active and retired military officers in politics and bureaucracy.
The current law allows for active military officers to serve their positions in 10 ministries and government agencies. The draft amendment proposed that the number of institutions would increase to 18.
The draft amendment also proposes to raise the retirement age of high ranking officers to 58 years and in some special cases to 60 years.
Human rights activists have called for more scrutiny in the amendment process saying that if approved it could allow for the return of the military into civilian affairs, one of the hallmarks of the New Order authoritarian regime.
