A

n earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck Java early on Thursday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The quake was at a depth of 40 km (24.85 miles), EMSC said.

EMSC had earlier pegged the earthquake at 6.2.

In April, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rattled residents on Mentawai islands west of Sumatra, forcing them to flee to higher ground before an hours-long tsunami warning was lifted.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 3 am (2000 GMT Monday), was in the sea near the Mentawai islands at a depth of 15.5 kilometres (more than 9 miles).

No casualties or severe damage were reported.
