Secretary-general of the PDI-P, Hasto Kristiyanto, said the decision not to invite anyone from the Democratic Party was made out of respect for the party's oppositional stance toward the ruling alliance.
eadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has issued an apology to the Democratic Party for not inviting politicians from the opposition party to an event staged to commemorate the country's founding president Sukarno over the weekend.
Secretary-general of the PDI-P, Hasto Kristiyanto, said the decision not to invite anyone from the Democratic Party was made out of respect for the party's oppositional stance toward the ruling alliance.
"I apologize for the decision, but we understand that this is an ethical problem because the Democratic Party has had an agreement with the NasDem Party and the Prosperous Justice Party [PKS]," Hasto was quoted by Antara, referring to the Democrats’ pact with NasDem and the PKS to back the presidential candidacy for former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan.
Hasto claimed that despite the oversight he continued extensive communication with the Democrat leadership, especially now that the party had grown closer following the meeting between PDI-P senior politician Puan Maharani and Democrat chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.
Over the weekend, the PDI-P staged a rally at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in South Jakarta, billed as a celebration for the legacy of the country's first president Sukarno, father of the party's chief matron Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Also present during the event were President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and the PDI-P presidential candidate, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo.
In his speech at the event, President Jokowi pledged that his administration would continue realizing Sukarno's visions for the nation.
