"The TNI must stay neutral so that the election can go smoothly and without a hitch," Yudo said on Monday, as quoted by Antara.
ndonesian Military (TNI) commander Admiral Yudo Margono has instructed all military personnel to stay neutral in next year’s general election to allow for a stable and smooth political process.
"The TNI must stay neutral so that the election can go smoothly and without a hitch," Yudo said on Monday, as quoted by Antara.
As proof of the TNI’s neutrality, Yudo said, its leadership had taken down banners promoting presidential candidates.
Yudo defended soldiers in Muara Teweh regency in Central Kalimantan who had taken down campaign banners set up by supporters of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo.
The local military commander in Central Kalimantan claimed that military personnel involved in removing the banners had taken the action only after consulting with local authorities.
"I want TNI to remain neutral, even after seeing all these banners," Yudo said.
