Some 2,100 graft convicts were granted sentence cuts under the Independence Day remission program on Thursday.
ormer House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto and former Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi are among thousands of graft convicts who received remission from the Law and Human Rights Ministry as part of the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
Some 2,100 graft convicts had their sentences cut under the Independence Day remission program on Thursday. Sixteen of them walked free immediately.
Setya, a former Golkar Party chairman, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2018 for his role in the corruption case pertaining to the e-ID procurement, which reportedly caused Rp 2.3 trillion (US$150 million) in state losses. The court also ordered him to pay Rp 500 million in fines and $7.3 million in restitution.
Meanwhile, a corruption court sentenced Imam to seven years in prison in 2020 for his involvement in a bribery case pertaining to the Youth and Sports Ministry’s grant to the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI). The judges also ordered Imam to pay Rp 18.1 billion in restitution.
Kunrat Kasmiri, the warden of Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung, West Java, which houses Imam and Setya, said the two convicts received a three-month sentence reduction.
During the Idul Fitri holiday in April, Setya also got a one-month sentence reduction under the special holiday remission program.
