Retno said that over the next two years Indonesia would use its position on the UNHRC to promote three key issues, increasing countries’ national capacities to uphold human rights; intensifying dialogue between countries and regional groups; and the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights principles.
ndonesia returns to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2024 to 2026 period after securing 186 out of 192 votes, a record-high number of votes for the country as it marks its sixth term on the council.
Following the success of its campaign in the voting session, Indonesia will join 46 other countries on the intergovernmental body responsible for promoting, protecting, addressing and making recommendations on human rights situations around the globe.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi announced the election results on Tuesday evening, reiterating “Inclusive Partnership for Humanity” as the theme for this year’s Indonesian campaign for a seat on the human rights council.
“Indonesia’s election to the human rights council [is a] manifestation of the trust given to us to continue our contributions toward advancing and protecting human rights. Inclusive partnership is key,” Retno said in a statement.
Three other Asia-Pacific countries were also elected to the council, namely Kuwait with 186 votes, Japan (175) and China (154).
