Three key officials, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, acting governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono and Nagai Katsuro, deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Japan, signed an agreement for the appraisal work on Monday.
The MRT Jakarta East-West corridor, connecting Cikarang in West Java and Balaraja in Banten, will run for 84.1 kilometers.
"I sincerely hope that the East-West MRT corridor project progresses smoothly and is completed on schedule, allowing the community to benefit from it as soon as possible," said Minister Budi, as quoted from Detik on Monday.
According to Budi, the development of the MRT and other rail-based mass transportation systems under the National Railway Master Plan, is aimed at improving the mass transit network and increasing ridership.
Additionally, he highlighted Japan's active involvement in aiding the construction of mass transit infrastructure in Indonesia.
"Besides soft loans, other creative financing schemes are needed to meet unfulfilled needs. I hope that in the future, there will be more collaboration between the Indonesian government and the Japanese government in the railway sector," said Budi.
